I'm pretty much out of the diaper bag stage. My oldest is 7 and my youngest is 20 months. I haven't carried a diaper bag in a very long time until this last one came around as my middle child was potty trained at 2. Even then I usually just carried some underpants and a change of pants in some sort of box or bag in my car.... never really came anywhere with me. Luckily we never had a lot of accidents so that worked out.
As for new baby mommy bags, your bag can weight a metric ton. I once won an award at a party I went to (I think it was a baby shower) on the weirdest things carried in a bag or purse. I polled some of my good friends to find out what the veterans have to say about this topic.
For the new baby, most moms will say that these are the key things to carry:
- Diapers (OF COURSE!!!)
- Wipes (No I don't make my own wipes but I do have crazy friends who do)
- Hand sanitizer wipes
- Bottle with formula (if you are THAT kind of mom) - ps I totally am :)
- 2 changes of clothes for new baby including onsies underneath
- Ziploc bag or some sort of waterproof device to keep wet clothes - (see my post on Wahmies Wet Bags - a must have for new moms and my go-to shower gift)
- Burp Cloth or some sort of towel
- Baby Bib
- Baby Tylenol
- Nail file (I prefer the Nail Scissors available on Amazon)
- Diaper cream
Now... those items are kind of a given. Of course you would have most of those things. But here are some things that I have to have in my bag at all times (and I have heard from others) regardless of the age of the kid.
- CHAPSTICK (I have been known to go home to get some if I forget - or stop at the store and pay $5 for some)
- Face wipes for baby, mom or random surface - I like the new J&J ones in the yellow package
- Boogie Wipes (love)
- Kleenex (for the old fashioned wipe)
- Sophie the Giraffe
- Band Aides
- Spray Neosporin
- Cell phone charger (no joke)
- Crayons and paper
- Stickers
- Snacks for Kids (smaller kids we liked melty yogurt things and puffs)
- Snacks for Mom (I get cranky when I'm hungry)
- A spoon (seriously, never know when you need it)
- $20 in small unmarked, non sequential bills
When the kid gets a bit older, I ditch the diaper bag and just use a purse. I get a diaper pouch with a mini travel wipes and I keep it in the side pocket of my driver's side door. Here are a few of the ones that I like:
Or the latest purchase I made was the Petunia Pickle Bottom Change it Up Clutch. I believe they have other clutches now but I like this one. It's just a clutch with a strap, changing pad, a little box for wipes and you can fit a diaper in there.
For me. This is all you need. You don't need to get this expensive one, I just found it on clearance so I splurged. They make a great Ju Ju Be or LillyBit version, and JJCole ones are every where. I kept one in my car and one in my husbands (even though I'm sure he had no idea it was there). If your toddler or small child person has a blow out or an issue, you really just need to go home. If you are out and about, God Help You.... you just need to get out of there as fast as you can or seek help from a nice friend or stranger and get a new change of clothes. I keep a change of clothes in the car, with an extra jacket or sweatshirt. All that stays in the car, I don't need it with me at all times.
Just remember, it's better to have too much than too little! I can't count on one hand the number of times that I have had to buy something insanely stupid because I forgot to pack with it with my child. You never make the same mistake twice :)
